Welcome
AutomatL@bs Project
The AutomatL@bs project is a network of virtual and remote laboratories for teaching and learning of control engineering. It is based on the integration of the hardware/software/human resources provided for the university groups taking part into this project. Shortly, AutomatL@bs provides to students two elements: web-based tools for booking time-slots in order to carry on the practical experiences and a working environment purposefully designed to ease the learning process. However, the network of remote laboratories in control engineering, AutomatL@bs, is not only the sum of its parts but it must be appreciated as a laboratory with a uniform structure regardless where the location of the physical processes is. To work in AutomatL@bs, all that a student needs is a Java-enabled browser and to be registered into the system. So, AutomatL@bs must not be considered just the simple juxtaposition of the different remote laboratories of each university taking part into the project. All the laboratories share a common working scheme and the learning materials have been carefully designed to allow students make the practical experiences in an autonomous way at their own pace. The project is coordinated by Professor Sebastian Dormido Bencomo of the Department of Computer Science and Automatic Control of the Spanish University of Distance Learning (UNED). On-line experimentation environment: eMersion
What is eMersion?
eMersion is a web-based collaborative experimentation environment focused to the management and publication of virtual and remote laboratories with educational purposes. From eMersion, it is possible to get a portfolio with all the materials that a student needs to complete an on-line session of practical assignments. The portfolio is composed by: user’s manual, theory, assignments, task protocols, booking system, and the eJournal. eJournal is a shared space to facilitate the communication and collaboration among students and instructors during the learning process. AutomatL@bs puts at the disposal of the students this valuable and innovative tool in order to complete the experimental sessions in control engineering across internet.

Members of the Project
Working groups belonging to the control engineering research area takes part in the AutomatL@bs initiative: Spanish University of Distance Learning (UNED), University of Almería, University of Alicante, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, University “Miguel Hernández”, and University of Leon. The initiative of this project comes to light the 2000 year when the Polytechnic University of Valencia organized the “1st Workshop on Web/Internet-based Teaching/Leaning of Control Engineering” (EIWISA00 – Enseñanza vía Internet/Web de la Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática). In this meeting, all the current members of AutomatL@bs took part and they planned the long-term goal of designing and building a network of remote laboratories based on the sharing of hardware resources. This workshop had its continuation in EIWISA01 (UNED), EIWISA02 (University of Alicante), EIWISA05 (University of Granada), and EIWISA07 (University of Zaragoza). AutomatL@bs is also an initiative of the control education group of CEA-IFAC (http://www.cea-ifac.es/wwwgrupos/educontrol) , the Spanish National Member Organization of the IFAC.
